It turns out the president had used his campaigning money to hire the crooks in order to get a head up in the reelection campaign, he was a republican running against a democrat he thought he could use any information from there meeting against them. However we have not gotten that far in the movie yet. Right now the two reporters are trying to collect as much information on these different political leaders and how they relate to the Watergate investigation. They are having trouble because no one will talk to them, they all say they"don't know anything". Until they meet a source named deep throat. And that is where we finished for today.
